PlayStation Plus Free Games will shut down servers on September 11th

One of the most exciting racing games of its time, which was once available for free on PlayStation Plusis ready to be sunset soon.

According to information available on the PlayStation Store, Codemasters’ Grid Legends will have its online servers shut down on September 11, 2026. This will only affect PlayStation and Xbox platforms. After that, players will no longer be able to access the game’s multiplayer features, including cross-platform play, online multiplayer modes, Quick Race, Dynamic Events, and leaderboards. That said, offline experiences will remain available. Players can continue to play the campaign and other single player modes beyond the shutdown date. The game also doesn’t have any online trophies, so you won’t lose any achievements you’ve won so far or in the future.

Grid Legends is also available on PC and Nintendo Switch, but EA, the publisher, has not indicated a similar fate for the game on those platforms. So if you own the game on one of these platforms, you should still be able to access multiplayer after 9/11.

As the fifth and latest installment in the iconic series, Grid Legends certainly a place for itself in the popular genre. Released in 2022, it has spent several years entertaining racing game enthusiasts. The game had its share of ups and downs, with most players coming away from career and story modes satisfied. The visuals, vehicle roster and soundtrack also left a positive impression on the player base. That said, it also didn’t sit well with a section of the community, mainly due to its lackluster AI, performance issues, and shortcomings in the story mode.

At the time of writing, Grid Legends is no longer included in a PlayStation Plus subscription. However, you can get 70% off the base price and pay just $18 to own the game on PlayStation right now. Xbox, on the other hand, doesn’t have an offer on the base price, but you can still play the game “for free” with one Xbox Game Pass subscription (included with the EA Play subscription it comes with).

If you own a PC, Grid Legends has currently slashed its price by 80% for both the base and deluxe editions of the Steam. The Nintendo Switch version, on the other hand, still costs $40.

Grid Legends’ online journey on PlayStation and Xbox may be coming to an end with the upcoming server shutdown, but that’s not an unusual move for a racing title that’s been around for years. Many live-service, multiplayer-centric racing titles eventually lose server support as publishers shift resources to newer projects. If you are yet to take Grid Legends for a ride, don’t shy away from grabbing the huge discounts EA has listed on the title at the moment. All in all, it’s still a valuable game for any racing sim fan, and it will still be partially available after the shutdown.

The title is still full of offline content, including its story-driven “Driven to Glory” campaign, career mode, and a wide variety of vehicles. Even without multiplayer support, there’s plenty of content for fans of the casual, arcade-style racing experience.
