More than two years after his abrupt departure from ESPN, the former SportsCenter anchor Max McGee finally tells his side of the story.
In a video posted to Instagram, McGee spoke publicly for the first time about the circumstances surrounding his dismissal from the network in 2024, saying he still doesn’t fully understand why he lost what he once considered his dream job.
While acknowledging that an internal investigation preceded his firing, McGee said he was never given enough information to fully understand the complaint or the reasoning behind ESPN’s decision.
“I can only tell you what I know”
McGee opened the video by addressing the questions he’s received since leaving ESPN.
“People have been asking me ever since what happened,” he said. “The honest answer is I can only tell you what I know.”
According to McGee, he repeatedly sought clarification during the investigation, but was left with more uncertainty than answers.
“I never got the specific details of the complaint that ultimately led to that decision,” he said. “I asked questions, I looked for answers, and I left that process with more uncertainty than clarity.”
McGee did not provide further details about the investigation itself, but made it clear that he disagreed with the outcome.

Dream job ended abruptly
McGee joined ESPN in 2022 after leaving a CBS affiliate in Baltimore and called the opportunity to anchor SportsCenter the realization of a lifelong dream.
After years of working his way through local television, he finally made it to one of sports broadcasting’s biggest stages.
That opportunity ended less than two years later.
In 2024, Athletics reported that ESPN had fired McGee after the company received a complaint from a female employee.
The report emerged as part of a broader story investigating the departure of former ESPN executive Lee Fitting.
At the time, McGee declined to comment publicly, saying he had been advised not to discuss the case.
Why he remained silent
McGee explained that he intentionally remained silent because he wasn’t sure what he was legally or professionally permitted to say.
He said staying silent felt like the responsible choice, although it became increasingly difficult as the speculation continued.
“I’ve been mostly quiet the last two years trying to do what I thought was right,” McGee said.
Eventually, however, he felt that others had begun to tell his story to him.
That realization ultimately led him to release the video.
Life after ESPN
McGee described the emotional toll the firing took on both his career and personal life.
“What made it difficult was that this wasn’t just a job,” he said. “This was something I spent years working towards. Thousands of hours on TV… Suddenly it was gone.”
He revealed that after losing his ESPN position, he moved back home and worked as an Uber driver while trying to rebuild his career.
He also described repeatedly interviewing for TV jobs without success.
“I still don’t fully understand all the reasons behind it,” McGee said. “And that uncertainty has been one of the most difficult parts of the last two years.”
He admitted that he experienced anger, embarrassment, disappointment and moments when he questioned whether he would ever work in television again.
Looking ahead
Although McGee said he remains in disagreement with the outcome of ESPN’s investigation, he acknowledged he may never receive the closure he was hoping for.
Instead, he said he has shifted his focus to creating new opportunities.
“I’m still here,” McGee said. “I’m still creating, I’m still interviewing, I’m still betting on myself.”
He concluded his message by emphasizing that his career is far from over.
“You don’t have to agree with me… This isn’t the end of my story. It’s just a chapter.”

McGee’s video gives his personal perspective on an episode that has largely been discussed through outside reporting. Although he says he was never fully informed of the reasons behind ESPN’s decision and disagrees with the outcome, the network has not publicly described the investigation or responded to his recent comments.
