Jake Reiner made his first public appearance since his parents The gruesome murders of Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner.
“Attended the premiere of ‘Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness’ this week. Airing Friday on @hbo @hbomax, catch me in the first episode 🫡 🇺🇸,” he caption snaps of himself on the red carpet Thursday.
For the premiere, Jake wore a black blazer, black pants and a gray T-shirt.
Jake, 35, and his sister, Romy, 28, has largely stayed under the radar since the tragedy.
The longtime couple was murdered in their Los Angeles home, located in the Brentwood area, on December 14. Rob and Michele were 78 and 70 respectively.
Their younger son, Nick, 32, was arrested as the prime suspect in the murders. He was hit with two separate charges of first-degree murder and is currently behind bars at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles.
He pleaded not guilty at a court hearing in February.
In April, Jake broke his silence upon their death in a heartbreaking Substack essay in which he detailed the exact moment he learned of his parents’ murder.
“I was at Union Station for a celebration of the life of one of my best friends, Christian Anderson, who passed away in October,” Jake wrote. “It was at that moment that I received a call from my sister Romy telling me that our father was dead. A few minutes later she called me back and told me that our mother was also dead.”
Jake said he feels “deprived of so many things” over losing his parents, noting that the tragedy “breaks my heart and infuriates me at the same time.”
“Nothing can prepare you for what it feels like to lose both parents instantly at the same time,” Jake continued. “It’s too devastating to understand. I still wake up every morning and have to convince myself that no, it’s not a dream. This really is my living nightmare.”
Later in the essay, Jake called his parents’ murders “horrific” and said that every day since then “has been horrible.”
He eventually referenced Nick by saying his brother is “at the center” of the tragedy.
“We lost more than half of our family that night in the most violent way imaginable,” Jake wrote. “It’s almost too impossible to treat.”
Romy has yet to break her silence about the tragedy, but in her essay, Jake noted that she “will tell (her story) in her own way and in her own time.”
Jake and Romy first addressed the gruesome deaths of Rob and Michele in a heartbreaking statement to Page Six on Dec. 17 — without mentioning Nick.
“Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we experience every moment of the day,” the brother and sister said. “The terrible and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever have to experience.”
They also asked “for respect and privacy” as they mourn their parents’ deaths privately.
They did not attend Nick’s February 23 court hearing.
Nick struggled with drug addiction for years and was in and out of rehab. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia before the death of his parents.
If convicted, Nick faces a possible death sentence or life in prison without the possibility of parole.
