Final Fantasy 9 is easily the Final Fantasy game that gets the most requests to be remade outside FF7 and maybe FF8. Fans have wanted it to get the same treatment as Cloud and co. received back in 2020, and for a while it felt like it was possible. Square Enix isn’t shy about remaking or remastering its library of incredible JRPGs, so it felt like a no-brainer that the studio would eventually get around to making at least some of its Final Fantasy game, the most important thing is FF9.
Unfortunately, it seems like Final Fantasy 9’s official returnwhich fans had thought would arrive any day, may have been put on temporary hiatus, if not a permanent one. It is gloomy news that pushes the project further and further away from reality. Fans have apparently caught on to this and have started rallying around each other, reacting to the remake’s existence or lack thereof, and simply trying to pull it all together while supporting each other.
For context, it very much seemed at one point that a Final Fantasy 9 reshoot was underway. Back in 2021, a catastrophic NVIDIA leak revealed a handful of production projects, the most important of which were FF9. Several of the projects revealed in the leaked documents ended up being real, so many assumed the same would be true for this one Final Fantasy 9 replay. It wouldn’t be too surprising to see a brand-new FF9 projectespecially since Square Enix has a penchant for revisiting old IPs.
But recently, reliable insider NatetheHate has said that he believes FF9 replay to be on iceat least according to his sources, and that we shouldn’t expect to see it anytime soon. It could be that it experienced failure of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth affected the chances of Square Enix investing so heavily in yet another remake of an older title, or it could simply be that the studio lost interest or faith in the project. Regardless, it seems very likely that a FF9 remake isn’t happening any time soon, and a recent one at that Reddit post seems to confirm as much.
Fans of FF9 and those simply excited about a potential remake have all lamented the loss of this alleged project, with user Nightwing24yuna (and many others) believing that “it really would have benefited from a remake” most of it. The mood is frankly a little sour among these fans, with user GargantaProfunda admitting they already had “given up hope” while Redditor ShyguyFlyguy simply said, “it doesn’t happen.”
Naturally, some users questioned the validity of the initial rumours, while others hoped it could happen eventually, with user Remote_Elevator_281 joking, “maybe 30 years from now we’ll get the remake lol.“However, it feels like it will never happen, especially since even its core fans who want to see a project like this come to life are left feeling disheartened and hopeless. There is still a chance that we will see a Final Fantasy 9 remake eventually, but right now maybe fans should stop holding out hope and instead come together to support each other and mourn what could have been.
