Lorraine Kelly admits she has been left in tears as she reflects on a ‘horrific’ incident

TV presenter Lorraine Kelly has reflected on a difficult period in her personal life and how a particular song helped her through her recovery

Lorraine Kelly has opened up about a heartwarming gesture from one of her beloved artists after a serious accident. The TV presenter was chatting about the soundtracks of her life on BBC Radio 2’s Tracks of My Years when she revealed the deep meaning behind a particular track choice.

Chatting to Vernon Kay, the 66-year-old said her “favorite song of all time” is Careful by Horse McDonald. Discussing her choice, Lorraine explained that the vocalist, who is a dear friend, helped lift her spirits during a particularly challenging time.

“Hest is the most extraordinary woman, she has a voice,” she told the host. “Every time I’ve seen her live, it goes right into your soul.

“When I wasn’t feeling well she came round. I’d been in a terrible accident and she came round and she sang that song to me. I could hear her voice, I could hear her singing in the garden so I thought Steve (her husband) must be playing a song in the garden and she was there singing to me,” the Glasgow-born host continued.

“It was… honestly, I was bawling my eyes out, it was amazing,” she continued. “My husband had arranged for her to come. She’s a friend, but for her to come and sing for me because I wasn’t in a good place, it was great. She’s someone I would turn to a lot.”

Lorraine did not clarify which accident she was referring to, but in 2012 she revealed that she came “close to death” after a horse riding accident.

To mark the 70th anniversary of the NHS, the ITV star paid tribute to the “fantastic” staff at St George’s Hospital in south London who had looked after her after the accident.

During her visit, she was reunited with consultant Sarah Krishnanandan, who was among the doctors who attended to her when she was rushed to hospital.

Ms Krishnanandan revealed the presenter arrived with “a deep gash” on her thigh and had “probably lost quite a bit of blood” after being trampled by her horse.

“I am just one of many who are helped by this incredible service on a daily basis,” shared Lorraine.

The presenter’s daughter Rosie Smith, who was visiting her mother in hospital at the time, also paid tribute to the staff herself.

“I only realized how serious it was when I saw her for the first time,” Rosie said. “She was really pale. The staff were great and the nurses were great. Martin calmed my mom down and they made me and my dad feel really comfortable.”

Lorraine is broadcast on weekdays from 9 on ITV and ITVX
