Tom Holland has suggested that a famous actor would be a solid candidate to become his successor in the role of Spider-Man after Holland finishes his time as MCU’s Peter Parker — and he seems to have chosen a perfect candidate. While Tom Holland is by no means the only talented one actor for playing Spider-Man so far, he may now actually be the most famous to have played the role, thanks to the prominence of The MCU timeline over the past nearly two decades.
With the Spider-Man MCU trilogy having shot its web-wielding hero to dizzying heights of fame – and with Spider-Man: Brand New Day set to follow it up in a big way – Holland’s time as Spider-Man has been both well-regarded and a huge hit in terms of box office success, meaning he’ll be a decidedly tough act to follow when it comes time for him to hand over the crime-fighting keys to someone else.
However, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible for any actor to do it, and there are actually a ton of talented prospects who could one day live up to the precedent Tom Holland set for the role. Interestingly, Holland himself has named one actor who he believes could be a star candidate to succeed him when it comes time for him to hand over his Spider-Man costume, and it’s a choice that’s hard to argue with.
Tom Holland suggested that a famous new actor would be an ideal successor for the role of Spider-Man
During an interview with Esquirethe question of who could take on the Spider-Man role after MCU star Tom Holland was brought up to the actor, who also mentioned his interest in staying connected to the hero’s story after his tenure as Peter Parker ends, be it as a producer or in another capacity.
Discussing who currently appears to be an ideal fit for the role, Holland referenced a young actor who recently stepped into the spotlight, saying, “Owen Cooper would be great… Obviously he’s super talented and the talk of the town right now.“
With Holland’s latter comments referring to Cooper’s role in the Netflix drama Youth – which saw Owen Cooper play the complex role of a teenager who kills one of his classmates after she rejects his romantic advances – it’s fair to say that the MCU star is on the money at the prospect of the newer actor kickstarting his career further and demonstrating his acting talents in the role of Spider-Man, although this would require a very different performance that has already won a Cooper.
Why Owen Cooper would be a good successor to the role of Spider-Man
While Youth showcased Owen Cooper’s talents in a far more serious and dark story and role than we conventionally see Spider-Man on screen, the show gave ample opportunity to see how well Cooper is able to get inside the head of the character he plays, and how he is able to provide nuance and believability afterwards when playing a role.
This ability would be immensely useful in taking on the role of Spider-Man. With so many star actors having played the role in the past, Cooper’s acting talent seems like it would still allow him to make the role his own and give a sense of nuance to a theoretical performance as the Marvel hero that could ensure it feels distinct enough while still holding onto what makes Spider-Man so iconic.
Crucially, Owen Cooper’s age means the actor would also be a solid successor for Tom Holland, as the actor shouldn’t play the role too soon as he could take over as Spider-Man though Holland is playing the role for a few years to come — meaning this potential casting makes sense on a practical level as well.
