It’s official, Apple TV’s Hit Elle Fanning TV show is getting even better in season 2

Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Margo’s Got Money Troubles Season 1!

Apple TV’s hit series Margo has money problems was already great in Season 1, but Season 2 is officially getting better. The dramedy, based on Rufi Thorpe’s book, introduces us to messy and lovable Margo Millet, played by Elle Fanning, who starts creating OnlyFans to support her newborn son after an unexpected pregnancy with her English professor. Mostly enjoyed the show changes to the book version of Margo has money problems. There’s a reason it has a 96% rating Rotten tomatoes and has been labeled a “masterpiece” by many.

However, one big change disappointed fans. Margo has money problems omitted JB, Margo’s love interest. In the book, JB reaches out through OnlyFans and pays her money to answer personal questions. This quickly becomes a two-sided exchange. Their relationship develops over time, becoming flirtatious and then romantic. Not only is the story a super compelling part of the book, but it also disproves every character who told her that no man would ever want to be with her if she did OnlyFans. Pushing back on the incorrect and stigmatizing narrative that sex workers are unlovable is crucial to the book’s message.

The only reference they make to JB is a little easter egg. Margo receives a tip of $1350 last scene of Margo has money problems season 1 from JB. It seemed like a nice nod to the beloved story they brought up. Because Apple TV was promoting the show as a limited series, that seemed to be all. Now that Margo has money problems has been renewed for season 2moment is the first introduction to the character who will officially appear in the sophomore outing.

Before the renewal announcement, Elle Fanning teased to interviewer Ethan Alter that “if we get a season 2, fingers crossed maybe margo can find love” (via Instagram). Since then, the creative team has repeatedly hinted that JB will appear Margo has money problems season 2. In an interview with Gold DerbyEva Anderson, season 1 executive producer and season 2 co-showrunner, teased the introduction of JB, advising people to “Maybe check out who leaves Margaret the big tip in the final scene and what his initials are.

Likewise, both executive producer/star Elle Fanning and David E. Kelley have discussed wanting to give each character and story enough time, including JB. Now they have the chance to make it the book romance. Elle Fanning said The Hollywood Reporter this:

I think we always knew it felt a little crowded, but we tried. Hoping for a second season, it felt like something to save for later. You want to give Margo her time because you have to introduce everyone in the first season and you want viewers to fall in love with the characters. Margo was going through a lot. We throw a lot of obstacles at her. We had to give it all the right time.

Similarly, David E. Kelley mentioned having to make difficult decisions about what to include in the interview Gold Derby. When it came to the JB romance, he said this:

We had an embarrassment of riches in the book, and we could service most of the stories, but not all of them. JB’s story is a big one that we didn’t want to cut short, and it gives us a great place to go in season 2. We haven’t forgotten that!

As a huge fan of the book and TV series, these quotes excite me. When Margo has money problems was only a limited series, the removal of JB felt like a serious letdown. Now that we know it’s going to be a series, they made the right call.

The TV show can still convey the idea that sex work does not make anyone less worthy of love or less desirable. But JB and Margo can be given room to develop instead of having their screen time severely limited. It may not be the sole focus of Season 2, but it may be more prevalent. The romance story doesn’t have to fight for attention with Margo fighting for custody, a strained mother-daughter relationship and Nick Offerman’s Jinx Relapses.

Margo’s Got Money Troubles Season 2 still has to change 1 big part of their romance

Most of JB and Margo’s love story may remain the same even if it is introduced in Season 2. The back and forth issues are not locked into a specific time frame. The flirtatious banter is barely affected by the larger story. Even minor parts of their romance, like Margo pushing him away because of CPS and lawsuits, can be easily rewritten. She could just as easily push him away because of the responsibility of single parenting without it changing the larger story. However, Margo has money problems season 2 will have to change a massive moment in their romance.

JB and Margo start their online flirtation and romance early in the book. As such, Margo’s doxxing completely changes JB and Margo’s relationship. He did not know that she had created a fantasy for him in emails until her actual information was posted on the Internet. To him, her lies hurt because he developed real feelings for her and was real with her. To her, her lies protected her from a stranger on the internet who asks personal questions, and her entire OnlyFan is made up of a fantasy. This drives a temporary wedge between them.

Because Margo was already doxxed Margo has money problems season 1, they have to write a new central conflict for the couple. JB and Margo won’t be as interesting to watch if everything always goes smoothly. The bumps in their relationship are what bring them back together stronger. Fortunately, Margo has money problems season 2 is in good hands so I trust they will find a good alternative.
