Lil Nas X opens up about his bipolar diagnosis, teases new music

Lil Nas X opens up about his diagnosis of bipolar disorder and shares details about new music in a personal video.

On Wednesday (June 17), the “Old Town Road” rapper posted a video to his Instagram page, updating fans on his mental health journey following his diagnosis of bipolar disorder in 2025. In the clip, which can be seen below, Lil Nas X is upbeat and forthcoming about his rehab treatment.

“I’ve been in rehab for a few months and since then I’ve been back home, whether it’s in Atlanta with my family or in Los Angeles with myself and friends and whatever,” he said. “Trying to ground myself down to Earth and get out of my head. I have a therapist now and a psychiatrist who have been really helpful.”

The Grammy Award-winning rhymer admitted he had an inkling he was bipolar but ignored it because he didn’t want to take any medication.

“I feel like I had known for the past few years, but I didn’t want to admit it because I didn’t want to take medication,” he said. “I mean, I’m already black and gay, like damn, God. Gay, bipolar, like I’m living life in an extremely hard way,” he jokingly added.

Nevertheless, Lil Nas X assured fans that he is fine and doing well.

“I feel much better, I feel better, I create freely and there is less fear in my heart. I just smell the roses,” he said.

The 27-year-old artist also said that he is working on new music, but that he has not fully immersed himself in the recording process.

“I’m not quite getting to it yet,” he said. “But I’m excited to do it, and I’m excited to go on that journey with you guys.”

In April 2026, a Los Angeles judge ordered Lil Nas X to attend a mental health diversion program to address his bipolar disorder, after his August 2025 arrest. If he complies with his prescribed medical program and stays out of legal trouble for two years, the court will drop the aggravated assault charges in the case. Additionally, Lil Nas X cannot possess weapons or threaten violence during the two-year program.
