The Greenock-based bus company paid tribute to super John McGinn with a clever rebrand.
Scotland’s World Cup campaign has sparked plenty of patriotic displays across the country and across the states, but one bus company has found a particularly creative way to show its support for national team.
McGill’s buses has temporarily renamed one of its vehicles McGinn’s, paying tribute to Scotland midfielder John McGinn, as excitement continues to build around the country’s return to WC for the first time in 28 years.
The specially branded Yutong E12 electric bus now runs on the company’s N6 route, which runs between Glasgow city centre and Clydebank, with the playful name change designed to celebrate both Scotland’s qualification and one of the team’s best-loved players.
Sharing footage of the newly branded bus on TikTok along with the soundtrack No Scotland No partytold McGill’s supporters: “From McGill’s to McGinn’s. Supporting Scotland every mile of the way.”
The video quickly struck a chord with Scotland’s supporters, garnering more than 13,000 likes on the platform. Fans flooded the comments section with praise, with one writing: “Get on McGill’s buses,” while another added: “It’s awesome.” A third follower simply stated: “Yassss. Love this.”
Others took the opportunity for some light-hearted banter at the bus company’s expense. As one commenter joked, “Rare w (win) for McGill’s here,” accompanied by several smiley face emojis.
What makes the tribute all the more fitting is that it came before McGinn went on to become Scotland’s hero in their World Cup opener against Haiti on 13 June.
The Aston Villa captain scored the only goal of the game, securing the much-needed victory and earning praise from supporters both in Boston and at home in Scotland.
Explaining the thinking behind the buses’ name change, Group Service Delivery Director Colin Napier said the company wanted to mark Scotland’s achievement in a way that would bring a smile to people’s faces.
He said: “Scotland at the World Cup is something the whole country can celebrate and we wanted to mark the occasion in a way that would make people smile.
“John McGinn has become one of the real faces of this Scotland team. He plays with heart, humor and total commitment, so turning one of our buses into ‘McGinn’s’ felt like the perfect tribute.
“We’re proud to support Scotland and we hope the bus helps spread a bit of excitement as supporters get ready for what promises to be a brilliant summer.”
Meanwhile, McGinn’s brother Stephen also welcomed the gesture, joking that his brother would be both proud and embarrassed to see his name on the bus.
He said: “John would probably be equal parts proud and embarrassed to see a bus named after him, but it’s brilliant and sums up the excitement everyone feels about Scotland coming to the World Cup.
“He has always given absolutely everything for Scotland and the support of the fans means a huge amount to him and the players.”
