SWAT spinoff gets a disappointing release update 4 months after filming ended

Shemar Moore SWAT exile keeps getting stuck.

Not long after SWAT series finale in May 2025, news of a spinoff broke, surprising fans and even those involved with the flagship. The new series will see Moore reprise his role as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson Jr. as he takes on a new role as a mentor figure to a fresh batch of rookies. Subsequently, it was confirmed that Jay Harrington and Patrick St. Esprit returns as Sergeant David “Deacon” Kay and Commander Robert Hicks, though only for the premiere.

To say that SWAT Exiles’ development and production had been controversial is an understatement. It drew flak from some of Moore’s former cast members, given how they were excluded from the conversation about the project. Fortunately, it seems that things have already been settled, with SWAT exile quietly end production for its 10-episode debut year back in February 2026.

For those wondering when the series might see the light of day, the latest news on the matter is not optimistic. Per Matt Mitovich’s Matt’s Inside Line newsletter, there is still no confirmed update on SWAT exile‘ release. Unfortunately, there’s also no further information on the series, including news on how its efforts to find its way around it for a platform are going. Suffice it to say, SWAT exile will not be published for the time being.

I checked in again, for the second time since filming ended on February 10th, and… nope, still no updates.

SWAT exile moved forward with Sony Pictures Television producing, though it has no US home or an international distributor yet. At the time, it seemed like a good indication of how much faith the studio had in the project, which was exciting for anyone wanting to see more of the franchise. That being said, four months and going silent may start to be worrying about its viability.

The flagship was known to survive several cancellation decisions from CBS. Thanks to strong fan support and the backing of Moore and the main cast, the Eye Network reversed their decision to pull the plug twice, allowing the show to extend its life for two more seasons. Having said that, SWAT‘s third cancellation finally stuckwhere the series ends in 2025 with almost no trace of setup for its upcoming denouement.

At least SWAT exile season 1 has already been filmed, so if it finds a distributor, the process of placing it in any platform’s programming would be a fairly easy process. Hopefully there will be a favorable update sooner rather than later though.
