“Candy and Todd had been having marital problems for a while now. Candy wasn’t happy because she found out Todd had talked to other women behind her back,” says a source PEOPLE exclusively. “She had no idea.” As rumors circulated, Candy opened up publicly about the emotional toll of the split. On Wednesday, the Real Housewives of Atlanta alum posted a series of smiling photos on Instagram – taken on the same day she filed for divorce – but told her followers the truth behind the photos.
“This is what I look like when I go through something,” the Bravolebrite49, began his caption.
She continued, “I show up for my family, I show up for my friends, I show up to handle my business, and I show up with a smile, all while inside I’m emotionally broken. In every frame of this video, I was dealing internally with something life-changing that most of the people in the pictures with me had no idea about my inner stress and sadness.” Candy insisted that her optimistic appearance was not deception but survival.
“This is not fake,” she wrote. “That’s just how I deal with things. I internalize and deal with it alone. I’m the poster child for the saying ‘check on your strong friend because you never know what they’re going through.’ Although she said she “usually (doesn’t) like to share stuff like that,” she felt compelled to open up after revisiting an old song she “wrote years ago” that she says “perfectly describe(s)” how she feels now.
In the emotional lyrics, Kandi Burruss sings, “I can’t keep running away.” Another verse adds, “I haven’t shed a tear, not even a whimper since December / I haven’t broken my temper or lost my temper / I’m censored.” “But deep down I want to explode and just let all my frustrations go,” the song continues. “Sometimes I want to scream and release the pain I have inside me.” While Candy has not addressed the allegations of infidelity, she said during a November Amazon Live that the break-up had been “in the works for a while”.
Middle Todd allegedly cheating, the estranged couple have been fighting in court. Todd Tucker filed for primary physical custody along with joint legal custody and final decision-making authority, and he also challenged the validity of their 2014 prenuptial agreement, claiming he signed it under duress without proper legal advice.
Candy responded by asking the court to seal the case to protect their children and prevent sensitive information from spreading online. She later filed an amended petition defending the pre-rup, pointing to RHO recordings show Todd admitting he was “good to sign” after consulting his lawyer. Candy seeking joint custody, a determination of child support and affirmed that the marriage is “irretrievably broken” with “no reasonable hope of reconciliation.”
