Dame Jilly Cooper left a huge sum to her two children and her stepdaughter in her will after her death aged 88 last year

Lady Jilly Cooper left a large sum to her children in her will after her death at the age of 88.

The hit author – who penned the likes of Riders and Rivals – died last October, with tributes pouring in from the stars of the hit Disney+ TV series on which her famous books were based, as well Queen Camilla.

Jilly died after suffering a fatal head injury during a fall at her home in Gloucestershire last year. She was found by family at her home in Bisley at around 5pm on October 4.

It has now been revealed that she had a whopping gross estate of £9,070,307. After any liabilities were settled, she ended up with a net worth of £8,557,118. Her two children Felix and Emily and her stepdaughter Laura will all receive an equal share, The sun reports.

It was her children Emily and Felix who announced their mother’s sad death.

“Mum was the shining light in all of our lives. Her love for all her family and friends knew no bounds. Her unexpected death has come as a complete shock. We are so proud of all she achieved in her life and cannot begin to imagine life without her contagious smile and laughter around us,” they said in a statement.

A medical examiner later determined that Jilly died of a traumatic subdural hematoma. Katy Skerrett, senior coroner for Gloucestershire, said: “The circumstances surrounding her tragic death were that she had suffered an unknowing fall at her home address on October 4. She fell, perhaps down some stairs, and suffered a significant head injury.

“There were no suspicious circumstances surrounding her fall. She later died, on October 5, with family present … The medical opinion was that this head injury was unfortunately catastrophic and therefore likely to be a terminal event. She was made comfortable, her condition unfortunately worsened thereafter and she died in the emergency room with family present.”

A few days before her death, Jilly had visited the set of Rivals. Actor Alex Hassell, who plays Rupert Campbell-Black, said at the time: “We’re all devastated. She was on set just the week before and obviously her voice and her character and her sense of creativity was such a driving force for the show compared to the source material.

“She would okay everything, or we would hear that things have changed because she didn’t think certain things characters do are quite right or representative of her view of the characters. We want to honor her and try to do our best to keep making the show as good as possible.”
