Dean McDermott is celebrating a milestone in his sobriety journey.
“WOW we are WOW!! 3 years!! Couldn’t have done it without my family, friends, community, sponsor and a 12 step program!!” McDermott, 59, wrote via Instagram Friday, June 26 “It all started with surrendering and asking for help.”
He continued: “Best decision I ever made. If you’re struggling, reach out. I love you all.”
McDermott also uploaded a video calling himself “pure Dean” and proclaiming that he is in good spirits.
“Today, June 26, I celebrate three years of being clean and sober. Yes, it can be done,” he said. “I want to tell you out there if you’re suffering and you’re hurting (that) it can be done. If I can do it, you can do it. It starts with reaching out and asking for help.”
McDermott continued, “I know in your darkest days it seems like Mount Everest to do it, but reach out. … Ask for help, it’s OK. You can’t do this alone, none of us can.”
McDermott, there stopped drinking after his divorce in 2023 from Tori Spellinginitially blaming the death of his marriage on his continued substance abuse problems.
“Alcohol made me feel good enough. I started feeling good enough until it got to a point where it didn’t — it ended up in isolation,” McDermott told Daily Mail in November 2023. “I ended up drinking a fifth of tequila every night, seven days a week, and a handful of (prescription drugs) by myself with a beautiful family in the other room. That’s what led to that, and that’s what led to that breakup and what happened between me and Tori. I couldn’t do that, the life I could live anymore, and I could live it anymore. yelling.”
According to McDermott, his alcohol-induced struggles “petrified” Spelling, 53, and their five children. (McDermott also shares son Jack, 27, with his ex-wife Mary Jo Eustace.)
“I would wake up angry that I woke up and I have these five, six beautiful children in my life, but I was so dark and hopeless that I couldn’t see it,” McDermott recalled to the outlet, praising Spelling’s support. “She came from just such a place of love and wanted me to be healthy and happy. … It was co-dependency. She put my well-being way before her own. She loved me so much that she wouldn’t really tell me how it affected her, even though I could see it on her face.”
Spelling and McDermott finalized their divorce in November 2025, since he promised to be friendly co-parents.
“We’re great co-parents. Our relationship is great,” McDermott exclusively told Us Weekly that month. “We’re a united front. It’s about the kids. At the end of the day, we’re a family, right? And whether we’re together or not, I love Tori. I’m going to love her for the rest of my life, and she’s going to love me for the rest of her life.”
