Jeremy Clarkson revealed during the last episode of Clarkson’s Farm that he has cancer, and Kaleb Cooper, who has been with the show since its inception, had a heartbreaking reaction
At the end of series five of Clarkson’s Farm, Jeremy Clarkson announced that he had cancer, and no one seemed more devastated than his farmhand Caleb Cooper.
During the last episode of Clarkson’s farm’s fifth series, Clarkson, 66, sat Cooper and Charlie Ireland down to tell them he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
He said: “I had a doctor, you remember back in May? I disappeared the other week and I got a biopsy and it’s cancer and it’s aggressive but it’s really early so the treatment will be, you know…
“I prayed that we could get the harvest done and then I could go and get some treatment, but it’s going to be smack in the middle.”
Wiping the tears away, Cooper said, “Take care of yourself, you go and do… if you need anything, just call.” Clarkson jokingly told him to “cheer up” and when the farmer asked when they would know if the treatment worked, the former Top Gear star assured him it “probably did” but they wouldn’t know for a few weeks.
Clarkson and Cooper have worked together on Clarkson’s Farm since the show started in 2021, and their bond is stronger than ever. Cooper’s role at Diddly Squat Farm must be a farmhand and help Clarkson with the day-to-day running of the farm. Although he doesn’t come from a farming background, Cooper has been working and helping out on farms since he was 13.
He became farmer of Diddly Squat Farm when it was managed by Howard Pauling and was kept on when novice farmer Clarkson took over.
In 2021, Clarkson said: “We needed a tractor driver for the show and we looked everywhere. I said, ‘I tell you what, you could look at the guy who’s actually doing the tractor here now’. So we got Kaleb and I think you’ll all agree he’s good on TV.”
In the show, Cooper and Clarkson work closely together and arguments are regular, often sparked by the younger man’s irritation at Clarkson’s lack of knowledge. He told The telegraph in 2024, that viewers “probably only see about 30 percent of the arguments” between the two of them, and that the camera crew sometimes “just walks off” in the middle of the fight.
But he added that despite the row, the two are “on duty”, texting each other every day and often going out for pints together. He later said: “We’ve become quite close now. He’s been a father figure to me when it comes to understanding TV. I’ve learned from the best there is and – I can’t believe I’m saying this – when he’s not f**king me off, there’s love.”
Cooper, who has become a star in his own right by publishing books, added jokingly The Times : “He referred to me as a tractor driver. I’m the Farm Manager. I’m the boss. It’s Kaleb’s Farm, secretly.”
