In the final moments of the penultimate episode of The way home season 4Elliot’s girlfriend, Kat Landry (Chyler Leigh), was seen pulling him out of the tunnels before the explosion. In addition, Fern sang Auld Lang Syne on New Year’s Eve after the stroke of midnight with her fiancé, Grayson Goodwin (Gabriel Hogan), while her true love Cliff, who also proposed to her, was in the tunnels during the explosion. Now a new preview for the series finale of The way home hinting at their fate.
The Way Home series finale preview teases a possible grim fate for Cliff Kane
In a clip of the series finale on June 21 of The way hometitled “Ahead by a Century,” shared by TV InsiderKat talks to Fern on the beach after the explosion. She states, “Begne! Fern! The pond won’t take me back. I don’t know if Elliot is still alive.” It seems that Elliot reached the pond and leftbut because he could only travel with a Landry, and Kat is still in 1926, he must have had help from someone else. Fern stares into space, dazed, whispering, “Cliff was supposed to kiss me at midnight. Why didn’t he kiss me? You don’t look like that girl. Not New Years.”
Cat replies, “Wait. Cliff isn’t here? I mean he was with us in the tunnels. We got out so I’m sure he did too.” Fern replies, “Of course he did, Kitty Kat. What goes in must come out, right? Him and I… we’ll grow old together.” At that time a man shouts, “Hey! Here! There’s a corpse here!” Fern closes her eyes and then, still dazed, says,“Let’s hurry. I have a column to write about a lovely party. Did you see the fireworks? They were so loud.” Kat then puts her arm around Fern and leads her away. The identity of the body is not revealed, but there is a good possibility that it is Cliff.
The Way Home Executive producers promise answers and questions in the series finale
TV Insider spoke with The way home executive producers Alexandra Clarke and Heather Conkie ahead of the fourth and final final season, and they gave a glimpse of what fans can expect as the beloved time travel drama draws to a close. Clarke stated, “The door is never closed.” Conkie added, “There’s always going to be questions in our show, even near the end. So it’s always nice to let people go, ‘Well, I wonder if . . .’
Clarke went on to say, “One of the things that our show does is that even when we give answers, there’s always a question mark at the end of those answers. Those answers beget questions. And I don’t think our finale will be any different, but there will definitely be answers, and hopefully satisfying ones. That’s the whole point.”
The preview of The way home the series finale is very exciting. Viewers still don’t know who the father of Fern’s child fathered by Colton Landry (Jefferson Brown) is, but many suspect that he is Cliff. That would make Cliff Colton’s grandfather and Kat’s great grandfather. During the series finale, which aired during the June 14 episode, Fern was shown telling Kat that she wanted to jump for the first time in her life. She was also seen hugging Cliff as they both cried.
The big question was whether that hug occurred during a trip to the past for Fern to have “five more minutes” with Cliff if he had died in the explosion, or if he survived. Hopefully the series finale is over The way home will give Fern the closure she needs either way and will bring this beautiful masterpiece of a show to a satisfying close.
The 90-minute series finale of The way home will be broadcast on Sunday 21 June at 9pm ET on Hallmark Channel.
