As the next generation of consoles approaches, we recently got some insight into the potential price range for the next Xbox system. Right now referred to as Project Helixit looks like the next console was meant to have a pretty hefty price tag. Comments from Xbox CEO Asha Sharma hint at prices no previous generation has heard of. There are several factors at play here, creating a potentially high price for the system.
In one message to Xbox staffwrites Sharma about the problems facing the development of new consoles. According to Sharma, the high cost of stock components has caused Xbox to spend twice what they have previously spent, and she suspects this will soon increase to five times. In an interview with AssetsSharma discusses the impact that AI data centers have on component costs. She also drops a bit of a bombshell when she alludes to the idea of consoles costing “thousands of dollars.”
Now, in the context of the interview, Sharma said that Xbox will have to pivot their current strategy, as she does not think that gamers will be able to afford such an expensive console. Although this hopefully means that Project Helix, whatever it is, won’t be anywhere near as expensive. However, this did not stop gamers from being worried about the idea of a thousand dollar or more console.
In one Reddit thread discusses Sharma’s comments, players speculate what the original costs of Project Helix may have been. A user, HeartInTheSun9, even hypothesized that it “must have been much closer to $2000,” if it was intended to mimic the power of a gaming PC. Another user, paqman3dagree that “(there’s) no way it wouldn’t be anywhere near $2k,” given the increases in component costs.
Now that Xbox is shifting gears away from such an expensive console, gamers are concerned about what tactics can be used to cut costs. User skar220 shared concerns that there will be “subscriptions everywhere” as a way for companies to recoup some of the losses they have to take to make consoles more affordable.
JTMx29 suggests what sounds like a reasonable solution, letting Xbox “scrape the PC hybrid” that was the original concept for Project Helix. While this will likely help lower the cost of the components needed to create the new console, it also means losing what made it revolutionary to begin with.
As AI data centers continue to proliferate, causing component costs to rise, it’s an unfortunate truth that we can likely expect more negative impacts like this in the gaming world. Xbox isn’t the only company that will be hurt by these ballooning prices, and those costs will likely be pushed onto gamers in the form of more expensive consoles. As AI becomes the villain in yet another story, I think it’s worth considering whether things like LLMs are really worth the negative impact they’re having on people’s livelihoods, and now their hobbies.
