Although the premise for The way home was based on time travel, in an interview with TV Linetold Clarke that the purpose of the show was not to create a science fiction world, but rather to show how the pond helped heal a family. She stated, “I think our show is unique because it’s a very traditional multi-generational family drama — but it also has this pond. It’s there as a tool for healing, a tool for getting different perspectives, maybe of a shared tragedy, or getting perspective on another era of your family and what they went through to come back and bring your own family back together.”

Clarke continued, “That’s the purpose of the pond for us. It was never about why the pond is the way it is. It was more about how the pond can help this family. If we had gone the route of dissecting why the pond is the way it is … it would have skewed a little too sci-fi. It would also have felt like the magician revealing their tricks.”

In an interview with BlackClarke explained, “The moment you start dissecting what the pond is and why it is the way it is, you take the air out of the magic and the mystery of it. Our show is not sci-fi. Our show is about a time-traveling pond that helps heal a family. Our show is about how the pond can help, not why the pond is.”

Yes, it was created for a reason, and there could be several reasons. No one would really say why the pond is the pond. It’s nice for everyone to have their own theory instead of us feeding it to them.”

Although some fans were frustrated by the lack of an answer about the pond’s origins in the series finale of The way homeConkie and Clarke’s explanation for why they decided not to reveal it makes sense.
